Attic Organization
As is with organizing other areas of your home, the first step to organizing your attic is to divide your things into 4 piles (Keep, Trash, Donate, and Sell). Next it’s a good idea to hire an expert to check for pests and rodents. Once your attic has been sorted, and you have a good idea of what will be stored in that space, you and your professional organizer can develop a plan for a shelving system.
There are several options for shelving (wooden shelving custom built with 2x4’s, metal shelving, wire shelving, or no shelving, just stacked bins). Airtight bins are a good choice for storing clothing, and items you don’t want to be damaged by hot and cold temperatures.
Attic Organization Ideas
Use a label maker for your bins, bags, and drawers.
Use clear, plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes, so it’s easy to see what’s inside. Plastic is also sturdier and will hold up over time.
Suspended shelves that are built into the attic’s trusses and the angular area where the roof meets the floor, are great for utilizing as much space as possible.
Repurpose old lockers to store sports equipment or clothing.
If you don’t have someone there to help you move stuff up to the attic, you can use a pulley system.
Use bungee cords to store loose balls.
Shoes can be stored inside of large PVC pipes that are cut and stacked together.
Find a way to hang your wreaths. They will last longer and maintain integrity better if you hang them.
Hang a rod for excess clothing.
Label bins by categories (Valentines, Easter, Spring, Winter, Christmas, Halloween, etc.)
Screw hooks into the rafters to hang storage.
