Kitchen Organization

Well organized Kitchen counter and wall shelving.

The best way to start a kitchen makeover is to take everything out of the drawers and cupboards, and place them on a table or countertops. When you see all that you have in one big pile it will make it easier to “trim the excess fat”. When sorting your kitchen items you will have 4 piles (Keep, Donate, Trash, and Sell). Once you have cleared the drawers and cupboards, now is the best time to do a deep clean of these areas. Now that you have sorted all your items, and your kitchen is clean you can start to think about defining zones for different kinds of items.

Zone 1 is for things you use Everyday; cups, plates, bowls, and silverware.  Make this zone close to the dishwasher.

Zone 2 is for Cooking and Baking; pots, pans, mixing bowls, measuring cups, cutting boards, spatulas, tongs, etc. These items should be close to the stove.

Zone 3 is your Pantry; dry goods, canned food, spices, and other cooking ingredients. You may also store larger kitchen devices like a mixer, blender, or crockpot.

Zone 4 is your Food Storage; tupperware, tin foil, plastic wrap, ziplock bags, parchment paper, and reusable bottles.

Zone 5 is for Coffee and Tea; coffee maker, tea kettle, coffee grinds, and tea bags.

Zone 6 is for Wine and Alcohol; liquors, mixers, shot glasses, wine glasses, wine bottles, and corkscrew.

Zone 7 is Under the Sink; sponges, trash bags, cleaning supplies, soap, dishwashing detergent, towels and recycling.

Now that you have the zones figured out you will want to tweak each zone so that the things you use most often are located in the most convenient places. You can transport food and ingredients that come in large bags or boxes into airtight plastic or glass containers, that make it easy to see what’s inside, and looks great in appearance.
