Playroom Organization

Playroom with modern cubbies and wicker bins

When organizing a playroom the easiest and most common way to keep games and toys accessible is by using a shelving unit with ‘boxed cubbies’. You can make your choice of what kind of bins to use for loose toys, and all of your board games will fit nice and neat into a cubby hole on the shelving unit. Another popular storage option is using some kind of dresser with drawers to easily store DVDs, video games, and other toys.

  • It’s never going to be perfect. Kids are kids, and the most important thing is that they are learning, sharing, having fun, and being creative.

  • Again, bins or baskets are an easy way to store toys, books, and games. Softer bins are preferable for younger children.

  • Try to store toys by category. You can use pictures of toys to make it easier for your children, or you can leave it a bit more open ended.

  • Choose kid-friendly furniture and shelving, so that it’s easy for them to reach and see everything.

  • Cycle toys in and out, so that your kids won’t get tired of playing with the same toys. You will easily be able to tell which are their favorite toys, and which ones you can donate.

  • Use seating that doubles as storage. This can be nice for adults who want a seat while they watch their children play.

  • Hang your children’s artwork on the walls. A bit of color can spruce the place up, and your children will feel valued and appreciated.

  • Foam flooring is a great material if your children need a place to play that is a bit more firm than carpet. The foam also protects from accidental spills that would normally hit your carpet.

  • Donate old or “junky” toys to schools or less fortunate families.

  • Have the kids practice a 10 minute clean up time each day. They can feel proud about a nicely organized space, and learn self-discipline as well.
