Home Office Organizing

Desk with Laptop, Plant and Natural Light

A home office should be a place of calmness and serenity. A place with few distractions, and a place to focus. Therefore, try to use a room that is not near a tv, kitchen, or kid’s playroom.  Natural light can enhance your home office. As human beings we function much better when we can see and feel the sun’s rays. Having a clean work space is a must for operating on maximum efficiency. Not only does a clean space feel good and comfortable, but it’s also very practical and important for completing any type of project.

Tips for Organizing a Home Office

  • Purge Paper. Go through all of your papers and decide to trash, shred, scan, take action or file away each piece of paper.

  • Categorize your file folder topics by color. This will make it much easier to find what you are looking for in a timely manner.

  • Have a physical inbox for incoming mail and papers that need action. Use an outbox to store your outgoing mail.

  • You will most likely need a printer, so it’s important to create a zone especially for that. This zone should include extra printer paper and ink cartridges.

  • Use tray dividers in your drawers to separate office supplies (pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, tape, paper clips, thumbtacks, posted notes, glue, scissors, and more).

  • Label makers come in handy and create labels which are great for files, drawers, bins, and wires. Having labels cuts down on wasted time used searching for lost items.

  • Divide your drawers into categories (stickies, tools, budget, writing tools, mail, and labeling). This will make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

  • Utilize binders for organizing important documents. Some binder categories include Medical, Pets, Auto, Manuals, Home, Personal, Financial, Taxes, and more.

  • Make sure to use wall space to your advantage. You can install a cork board, calendars, to do lists, whiteboards, wall hanging file systems, and shelving for books and other office essentials.

  • If you have a door in your office you can use the back of it to place a shoe holder that you can use for extra storage for office or arts and crafts supplies.

Feminine Home Office Desk
  • Your desk should be visually pleasing and practically useful.

  • Shelving is a crucial component that keeps your office in order and feeling spacious.

  • Store items in bins or in cubby holes. Cubby holes with wicker bins is a great look and very practical.

  • Add some nice artwork, plants, or other decorations to liven up your space.

  • Install full length cabinet systems that take up an entire wall. This includes shelving, cabinets and drawers.

  • A command center that includes your printer, inbox, trash, shredder, calendar and inspirational cork board is a good option if you have the space.

  • If you have important documents or items that you don’t want to risk getting damaged, then you may want to invest in a fireproof cabinet with a lock on it.

  • Replace old monitors that take up space with a new relatively inexpensive flat screen monitor.

  • Consolidate your “To Do” list, using an app on your phone, so that you don’t have extra paper and sticky notes all over the place.

  • Don’t forget to organize your computer as well as your physical space. Create main category folders and then use sub-folders for further organization. Backup files and clear out your email.
